APTS Team Participates in “The Concussion Discussion”
On Friday, September 20, 2013, Dale Buchberger,PT,DC, Tom Zirilli,PT, Maggie Whitehouse,PTA and Carolyn Collier,PTA attended a concussion seminar at The Doubletree Hotel in Syracuse, NY. Taught by Ethan Hood, PT, DPT, MBA, GCS, “The Concussion Discussion: Concussion and Post-Concussion Syndrome Management” gave us a beginner’s insight into how to recognize, diagnose, and treat concussions, something that is becoming more prominent in young athletes today. One of the most valuable take-home facts we learned was that just because you wear a helmet while playing a particular sport, it does not protect you from getting a concussion. Not everyone realizes that physical therapists can treat concussions, so if you suspect you or someone you know may have a concussion (symptoms include but are not limited to difficulty thinking clearly, headache, blurry vision, irritability, sleeping more or less than normal, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, sensitivity to noise or light, or balance problems), make an appointment with your doctor and request to be seen by a physical therapist.
